Voters from Maine to California headed to the polls on November 4, 2014, to voice opinions about their states' chief executives. A total of 36 gubernatorial seats were on the ballot in 2014. Most of the incumbent governors with expiring terms sought re-election, with 29 out of 36 (80.1 percent) of incumbents running for new terms. Four incumbent governors were ineligible to run due to term limits, including Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R), Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman (R), Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe (D) and Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley (D). Three governors declined to seek new terms, including Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D), Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee (D) and Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R).

Republican governors held 22 of the 36 governors' mansions heading into the 2014 campaign. Of the Republican incumbents eligible for re-election, 19 out of 20 (95 percent) were seeking new terms in office. Nine states with gubernatorial elections were considered toss-ups or vulnerable for partisan switch, according to polling figures and reports from FiveThirtyEight, Larry Sabato's Crystal Ball and Governing prior to the election. The vulnerable governor seats were held by the following incumbents:[1][2][3]

Party breakdown

In addition to flipping Arkansas and Illinois, Republican candidates also won seats previously held by Democrats in Maryland and Massachusetts. Republicans won 24 seats out of the 35 seats decided as of November 15, 2014, with the Vermont gubernatorial race still undecided.
