This measure sought to renew the current fire levy which is set at a rate of $1.88 per $1,000 of assessed value for a further ten years in order to continue to pay for maintenance and operational costs of the fire department in the township.

The question on the ballot:
|Shall the previously voted increase in the tax limitation and levy, imposed under Article IX, Sec. 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963, as reduced by the required millage rollback, which last resulted in a levy of 1.8819 mills ($1.8819 per $1,000 of taxable value), be renewed in an amount not to exceed 1.8819 mills ($1.8819 per $1,000 of taxable value) against all taxable real and tangible personal property within Hartland Township, Livingston County, Michigan, for a period of ten (10) years, 2012 to 2021, inclusive, for the purposes of operating, equipping, constructing and purchasing for the Hartland Deerfield Fire Authority or for any other purpose authorized by law for fire service purposes; and shall the Township levy such renewal in millage for said purposes; the estimate of the revenue the Township will collect if the millage is approved and levied by the Township in the 2012 calendar year is approximately $1,100,000.|
