Judges in Hawaii do not participate in judicial elections. Instead, they are chosen via gubernatorial appointment from a nominating commission and confirmed by the Hawaii Senate. When their terms expire, a nominating commission determines whether to retain the judges.[1]

Similar systems, with some variations, are utilized in Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
