The Ballotpedia article List of ballot measures by topic describes the different topic or subject areas into which most American ballot measures can be categorized. For each of those topics, Ballotpedia has a corresponding article that lists the ballot initiatives that fall under that topic description. For an example, see marijuana initiatives.
Categories and lists are two different ways of doing the same thing. The objective is to make it easy for your reader to find other, similar, content. Lists and category tags also enable the reader to gain a broader picture of the scope of ballot initiative topics.
Most ballot initiatives fall into more than one topic category. For example:
- Arizona Taxation of Decriminalized Marijuana (2008) falls under both "marijuana" and "sin tax".
- Support Legal Arizona Workers Initiative (2008) falls under "immigration", "business regulation" and "administration of government".
