Before his election to the Legislature, Hopgood interned in Washington D.C. for former Congresswoman Lynn Rivers during the summer of 1995. He also worked for the Michigan State AFL-CIO as a Labor Coordinator during the 1996 campaigns. Hopgood's candidate won the race, one of the closest races statewide. This win helped turn the Michigan House over to the Democrats once again. In 1997, Hoon-Yung worked for the House Democratic Policy Staff, concentrating on issues concerning K-12 education. He joined the legislative office in 1999, working with former State Rep. Raymond Basham.
Hopgood graduated from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor with a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science in 1996. Hoon-Yung attended Holland Elementary School, Hoover Junior High School and Truman High School where he graduated with honors in 1992.
