Recall laws

The procedures for initiating a recall vary because of differences in state laws. The number of signatures required, and the time allowed to collect them, differ widely.

California

The State of California provides a 30-page document titled "Procedure for recalling state and local officials" detailing the laws governing recall in California.

A "Notice of Intention" to circulate a petition, signed by 65 voters, must be submitted. Once the actual petition is circulated, signatures must equal 12% (20% for state legislators) of the last vote for the offical being recalled, including voters from each of five counties equal in number to 1% of the last vote for the office in that county.
