John Howard Coble (b. March 18, 1931) is a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from North Carolina. Coble was elected by voters from North Carolina's 6th congressional district. Coble defeated Billy Yow and William Flynn in the Republican primary on May 8, 2012.[1]

Based on an analysis of bill sponsorship by GovTrack, Coble is a "moderate Republican follower".[2]

Coble won re-election on November 6th, 2012.[3]

Biography

Coble was born in Greensboro, North Carolina. He attended Appalachian State University from 1949 to 1950, but earned his A.B. from Guilford College in 1958, and his J.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Law, Chapel Hill in 1962.[4]

Career

Coble took a break from his undergraduate studies and served in the United States Coast Guard from 1952 to 1956, later returning to serve from 1977 to 1978. In the interim, Coble served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve from 1960 to 1982. He was admitted to the North Carolina State Bar n 1966, and became a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1969, and from 1979 to 1983. He also served as United States Assistant Attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina from 1969 to 1973, and as Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Revenue from 1973 to 1977. He also worked as an attorney in private practice. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1984.[5]

Fiscal Cliff

Voted "Yes" Howard voted for the fiscal cliff compromise bill, which made permanent most of the Bush tax cuts originally passed in 2001 and 2003 while also raising tax rates on the highest income levels. He was one of 85 Republicans that voted in favor of the bill. The bill was passed in the House by a 257/167 vote on January 1, 2013.[8]

Coble ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing North Carolina's 6th District. Coble won the nomination on the Republcian ticket. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run was February 29, 2012. He defeated Billy Yow and William Flynn in the May 8 Republican primary.[1]

The Washington Post listed the House of Representatives elections in North Carolina in 2012 as one of the states that could have determined whether Democrats retook the House or Republicans held their majority in 2013.[10] North Carolina was rated 8th on the list.[10][11]
