Current officeholder
The current director is Celia Gould. She was first appointed by Governor Butch Otter in December 2006 and assumed office on January 2, 2007. As the director of agriculture serves at the governor's pleasure, Gould is not subject to periodic reappointment.
In addition to her duties as director, Gould owns and operates a third generation farm and ranching operation, GlennDale Ranches, in Buhl, ID. Gould served for 6 years as a member of the Idaho House of Representatives from 1996 to 2002. She holds a B.A. in political science and an M.P.A. from Boise State University.[1]
Authority
The office of agriculture director is established by state law.[2]

There is hereby created the department of agriculture. The governor shall appoint a director of the department of agriculture, subject to the provisions of section 67-2404, Idaho Code. |
Qualifications
State law requires that the director be "a person who is qualified by training, knowledge and demonstrated ability or experience in agricultural pursuits and their management."[2]

Appointments
The director of agriculture is appointed by the governor with the consent of the state Senate. The director serves at the governor's pleasure.[2][3]

Term limits
There are no term limits associated with the office of agriculture director.
Vacancies
If a vacancy occurs, the governor appoints a new director per the procedure listed under "Appointments" above.[2]
Duties
The director is the executive head of the Idaho Department of Agriculture, the state agency tasked with regulating and promoting the state's agricultural produce. State law tasks the director is designating and hiring employees, acquiring and disseminating information regarding "agricultural pursuits," and encouraging and promoting "in every practical manner the interests of agriculture, horticulture ... the livestock industries," etc.[4]
