Issues

Campaign themes

2014

Birman's campaign website listed the following issues:[3]

  • Jobs and the Economy: "Now, as a result of policies such as Obamacare, confiscatory taxation and overwhelming and costly regulations on employers, families are struggling to find full-time work, with many new jobs created being part-time, while employee benefits, such as healthcare for spouses are rapidly disappearing."
  • Deficit and Debt: "I agree with Admiral Mike Mullen who warned in 2010 that the greatest threat to our national security is our national debt. Today it stands at $17 trillion, up from $13.5 trillion when Admiral Mullen made that warning."
  • Healthcare: "Obamacare rests on a crumbling foundation of broken promises and heavy-handed government control of choices that rightfully belong to individuals."
  • Immigration: "Legal immigration is the life-blood of our nation, and we should encourage it and free it from the bureaucratic red tape that keeps some families waiting decades to be reunited with their loved one. On the other hand, illegal immigration and amnesty undermine the very path that millions of legal immigrants have followed here."
  • Constitution and Liberty: "My first and only allegiance will be to the Constitution that every Member of Congress swears an oath to preserve and protect. Congress has ignored too many Constitutional principles. Having risked so much for a chance to live in freedom as an American, I will never forget them."

California's 7th Congressional District is a battleground district in 2014 due to the low margin of victory for Democrats in the last election and last two presidential elections. Incumbent Ami Bera (D) and Doug Ose (R) triumphed in the blanket primary over Igor Birman (R), Elizabeth Emken (R), Douglas Arthur Tuma (L) and Phill Tufi (I). Bera and Ose will face off in the general election on November 4, 2014.[5]

The National Republican Congressional Committee added Birman to their "On the Radar" list in November 2013. According to the NRCC, candidates that make this list receive "...the tools they need to run successful, winning campaigns against their Democratic opponents."[6]
