The petition drive was initiated in late May 2011 by opponents of a new civil unions law in Illinois which went into effect on June 1, 2011.[1] The new law gives same-sex couples the same state rights as a married man and wife. The state is scheduled to begin issuing licenses for civil unions on June 1.[2]

If 298,399 signatures were collected by the May 7 deadline the advisory measure would have appeared on the 2012 statewide ballot. If approved by voters, the proposed constitutional amendment would have reviewed and voted on by the state legislature. If approved by officials, the question will return to voters for a final vote.[1]
Signatures were not filed with the Illinois Secretary of State by the filing deadline, meaning the measure will not appear on this year's ballot.
