Eligibility to Vote
Primary election

Iowa is one of 21 states to use a strictly closed primary system. While Iowa has closed caucuses, voters may change registration at polls. Voters were required to register to vote in the primary by May 26, 2012 , which was 10 days before the primary took place .[1] Voters also had the opportunity to register at the polls on Election Day.[2] (Information about registering to vote)

The deadline to register to vote is 10 days prior to the election day, which in 2012 was October 27.[3]

Voting absentee

Eligibility
All voters are eligible to vote absentee in Iowa. There are no special eligibility requirements for voting absentee.
Deadlines
To vote absentee, an absentee ballot application must be received by the election office by the Friday before the election. A returned absentee ballot must then be postmarked the day before election day and received by noon on the Monday following the election.

Voting early

Iowa is one of 33 states that has early voting with no specific requirements as to who can vote early. Early voting begins as soon as ballots are made available and ends on the day prior to election day.
