Italian Government Official Impediment Legislation Referendum, 2011

An Italian Government Official Impediment Legislation Referendum was held in the country on June 12-13. The Referendum will ask citizens to vote of three different issues.

Preliminary results show this measure was defeated meaning the legislation will not be implemented.[1]

This measure would have enacted legislation which would have made it illegal for a official currently serving in the government to be subject to a criminal trial. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is currently involved in four criminal trials and this legislation would have gotten him out of those trials.[2] The trials deal with fraud and corruption claims against Berlusconi, as well as accusations of paying for sex from an underage prostitute.[3]
