Sullivan ran in the 2012 election for New Mexico State Senate District 39. He is running against Nicole Castellano and incumbent Phil Griego in the Democratic primary on June 5, 2012. Sullivan lost to Griego, who will face Republican Aubrey Dunn in the general election on November 6, 2012. [2][3]

During the campaign, Sullivan filed a complaint with the New Mexico Secretary of State against Phil Griego's campaign alleging misuse of campaign funds. Phil Griego maintained the expenses are strictly campaign related.[4]
