Brown was a Republican primary candidate for District 3 of the Montana Public Service Commission in 2012. He faced Edward McCrone, Michael More and Roger Koopman in the June 5 Republican primary, which Koopman ultimately won. Incumbent John Vincent and Mark Sweeney ran in the Democratic primary. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.
