In his current position as insurance commissioner, Donelon holds jurisdiction over the Life, Health and Accident, Property and Liability, Marine and Inland Marine, Fidelity and Surety, and Title insurance industries in Louisiana.
Biography
Donelon was born New Orleans, Louisiana. He is married and has four children. Donelon served in the military for 33 years before retiring as the State Judge Advocate for the Louisiana Army National Guard with the rank of Colonel. He served as Executive Council to the Governor from 1972-1975, was on the Jefferson Parish Council from 1978 to 1980, and a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1982-2001.[1]
He has served as Insurance Commissioner since February 2006. In 2011 he was selected as the National Association of Insurance Commissioners' (NAIC) Vice-President.[2]

Political career
Louisiana Commissioner of Insurance (2006-present)
Donelon first assumed office as Louisiana Commissioner of Insurance in February 2006 when then commissioner J. Robert Wooley resigned. Donelon won a special election for the position in September 2006, was elected to a full term in 2007, and won re-election in 2011.

Donelon won re-election in the primary on October 22, 2011 against Donald Hodge (D). Since he won with more than 50% of the primary vote, Donelon was declared the winner and did not need to go on to the November 19 general election.
