Carpenter defeated Democratic candidate Lee Murphy and Evangelical Christian candidate Donald Paul VanWinkle by 23,553 votes. Murphy received 11,719 votes and VanWinkle received 1,004 votes in the November 2 general election. [1] Democratic incumbent Ed Worley did not seek re-election.
In the May 18 primary election, Carpenter defeated opponents Kent Kessler and Barry Metcalf with 4,405 votes. Kessler received 4,264 votes and Metcalf received 2,955 votes. [2]
