Brandes is a real estate broker and manages his family's asset portfolio. Earlier in his career, he worked for Cox Lumber Co.'s real estate development team. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserve, during which he was called to active duty in Iraq as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Brandes earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Carson-Newman College.
