Jefferson County Term Limit Vote (2009)
The measures - ballot question 1A (district attorney) and 1B - called for an increase in the number of consecutive four-year terms city officials can serve. At the time of the election the limit was set at 2 consecutive terms. If approved, the measure would have increased the limit to 3 consecutive terms. City Officials that affected by the proposal, if approved, includes: the district attorney, sheriff, assessor, clerk and recorder, treasurer, coroner and surveyor.[1]
Election results
Both ballot measures were defeated. Voter turnout was 28.37%.[2]
Ballot Question 1A:
- Yes: 38,613 (41.67%)
- No: 54,042 (58.33%)
Ballot Question 1B:
- Yes: 39,829 (43.12%)
- No: 52,538 (56.88%)

The ballot language for Ballot Question 1A read as follows:[3]
Shall the right of voters to elect the candidate of their choice to the office of District Attorney of the First Judicial District be expanded by lengthening the term limit for that office by one additional term (for a maximum of three consecutive terms) as authorized by Article XVIII, Section 11, of the Colorado Constitution?
The ballot language for Ballot Question 1B read as follows:[3]
Shall the right of Jefferson County voters to elect the candidate of their choice for the offices of Sheriff, Assessor, Clerk and Recorder, Treasurer, Coroner and Surveyor of Jefferson County be expanded by lengthening the term limit for those offices by one additional term (for a maximum of three consecutive terms) as authorized by Article XVIII, Section 11, of the Colorado Constitution?
Background
Both Gilpin and Jefferson County have unanimously approved the same question for the 2010 ballot. Colorado is the only state that imposes a term limit on the district attorney.[4]
In 1994 Colorado voters voted in favor of a two consecutive term limit for local elected officials - Colorado Issue 17 (1994).
