Ellis received a B.S. in Animal Science from the Oklahoma State University in 1969. Prior to serving as senator, Ellis served in the United States Military from 1969-1972. Additionally, Ellis is the Co-Founder/Executive of Southeast Times Newspaper.

Ellis ran in the 2012 election for Oklahoma Senate District 5. Ellis ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on June 26. He defeated Howard Houchen in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[1][2]
