Patterson intends to run for Lieutenant Governor of Texas in 2014 rather than see re-election as land commissioner.[1][2]
Biography
Patterson, a native of Houston, served in the military (active and reserve) for 25 years. He received his commission in the Untied States Marine Corps upon graduation from Texas A&M in 1969. Having volunteered to serve during the last six months of the Vietnam war, he represents the fourth generation of his family to serve during war time. "His great grandfathers fought on the side of the South in the War Between the States. His grandfather served in both World War I and World War II. Patterson’s father also served in World War II as well as in the Korean War."[3] Patterson served on active duty until 1980 when he transferred to the reserves and eventually retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1993. [3] His political career began in 1992 with an election to the Texas State Senate.

Political career
General land office commissioner (2002-current)
Patterson was first elected as Commissioner of the General Land Office in 2002 and was re-elected to the position in 2006 and 2010. Since holding the office some of his accomplishments include: transforming the Permanent School Fund, made the state a leader in renewable energy. and oversaw a major expansion of the Veterans Land Fund.
Texas legislature (1992-2002)
Patterson served three terms as state senator for District 11, which includes Harris, Galveston, and Brazoria counties. His major accomplishments in the senate include passage of the concealed hand gun law, a constitutional amendment allowing home equity lending, the state coastal management plan, and the creation of the Texas State Veteran's Home Program. In line with his practice of always advocating for veterans he chaired the first Veterans Affairs committee in the Texas Senate. [4]

Patterson plans to retire from the land commission in order to run for Lieutenant Governor of Texas in the 2014 elections. [5][6][7]
2010
Patterson won re-election as Texas Commissioner of the General Land Office in the November 2, 2010 election, defeating Democrat Hector Uribe and Libertarian James L. Holdar.[8]

Personal
Patterson lives in Austin and has four children, twins Samantha and Cole, and Emily and Travis. His son Travis is a graduate of Texas A&M, where he was commissioned as a Marine Lieutenant. He has served two tours of duty in Iraq as a U.S. Marine attack helicopter pilot. Emily is an attorney working in Kosovo for an agency funded by the U.S. State Department. [11]
