Arnold was appointed to the Indiana State Senate to fulfill the unexpired term for Senate District 8 in March 2007. He was elected to a four-year term in 2008 and has served in that position since.
Arnold has served in the United States Army Reserves. He has also been an Air Traffic Controller for the United States Air Force. He has worked as Chief Investigator/Paralegal for the LaPorte County Prosecuting Attorneys Office. From 1975 to 2007 he worked for LaPorte County Sheriff's Office. He was Sheriff of LaPorte County from 1999 to 2007.
Arnold earned his BA in Political Science/History from Valparaiso University. He went on to receive his Paralegal Certificate from Indiana University.

Arnold won re-election in the 2012 election for Indiana State Senate District 8. Arnold defeated Maxine Spenner in the May 8 Democratic primary[1] and defeated Eric Harris (R) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012. [2][3]

On November 4, 2008, Democrat Jim Arnold won the election to the Indiana State Senate District 8 receiving 35,833 votes, ahead of Republican Allen Stevens Jr. receiving 6,757 votes, and Libertarian Gregory Kelver receiving 2,187 votes.[4]
