Jim Barcia has been a Democratic member of the Michigan Senate since 2002 and previously from 1982 to 1992. Barcia serves as the Democrat Associate President Pro Tempore along with Republican Associate President Pro Tempore Alan Sanborn. Barcia is term-limited in 2010. Barcia also was a member of the United States House of Representatives serving as the Representative from Michigan's 5th Congressional District from 1982 to 1992. Before serving in Congress, Barcia was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 1976 to 1982 and served as the Majority Whip from 1979 to 1982 when Democrats had control at that time.

Barcia has had extensive political experience before becoming an elected official. Barcia was a Staff Assistant for former United States Senator Phillip Hart from 1971 to 1972 and was a legislative aide for the House Agriculture Committee from 1975 to 1976. Barcia had five years of private sector experience working as a Quality Control Inspector for General Motors from 1970 to 1974 and as a Community Service Coordinator for Michigan Community Blood Center from 1974 to 1975.

Barica graduated with his Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration from Saginaw Valley State in 1974.

Jim is married to Victoria Barcia. They have two step-children and reside in Bay City, Michigan.
