Jim Barnett was a Republican member of the Kansas State Senate, representing District 17 from 2001 until his resignation on October 1, 2010. Barnett resigned to run for Jerry Moran's U.S. House seat, but lost in the primary.[1] He was a member of the Unified School District from 1991 to 1999 and in 2003. He served as the Board's president from 1993 to 1997 and in 2003.

Barnett recently announced his resignation from the Kansas Senate and his intention to join a Topeka medical practice.[2]

On November 4, 2008, Barnett was re-elected to the 17th District Seat in the Kansas State Senate, defeating Kitty Frank (D).[9] In 2008 Barnett raised $80,587 for his campaign, while Frank raised $9,139.[10]
