Joe McDermott was a Democratic member of the Washington State Senate. He had represented District 34 since his appointment in 2007. He was serving his first elected term. He was the Majority Education Policy Leader, as well as the Assistant Majority Floor Leader. Previously, McDermott served in the Washington State House of Representatives from 2001 to 2007.

McDermott earned his BA in History/Political Science from Gonzaga University. He went on to earn his MPA in Public Administration from the University of Washington.

McDermott has worked as an instructor for South Seattle Community College. He has also worked as Senior Budget Analyst for the Seattle School District. He is a member of the staff of Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney, John Ladenburg.
