Andrist's professional experience started in 1951 as an editor for a journal publishing company and in 1958 he became the owner and publisher. He retired in 1991. In 1997 he became the director of North Dakota Public Television and still holds this position.
John Andrist attended the North Dakota College of Science.

In the 2009 legislative session, Andrist is the sponsor of a bill to put a proposed constitutional amendment to the North Dakota Constitution on the November 2010 ballot that would alter the provisions of Measure 3 from 2008, a ballot initiative approved by about 54% of the state's voters.[1]

Andrist ran in the 2012 election for North Dakota Senate District 2. Andrist ran unopposed in the Republican primary on June 12. He defeated Lynn Jacobson in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[2]
2008
On November 4, 2008, Andrist was re-elected to the 2nd District Seat in the North Dakota State Senate, besting Dorvan Solberg (D). [3] Andrist raised $20,600 for his campaign, while Solberg raised $16,025. [4]
