John J. Burns (born in 1959) is a former Republican Attorney General of Alaska. First appointed to the statewide public position in late-November 2010 by Republican Governor Sean Parnell, Burns initially replaced Daniel S. Sullivan who resigned in order to take up his responsibilities as the newly appointed Commissioner of the State Department of Natural Resources. But in November 2011, Burns announced his resignation effective January 2, 2012, citing the need to spend more time with his family. He was succeeded in office by Michael Geraghty.

Professional experience

Shortly after receiving his law degree, Burns returned briefly to the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) where he served an adjunct faculty member teaching both graduate and undergraduate business law course. He then joined the Anchorage-based private firm of Birch, Horton, Bittner & Cherot before establishing his own practice, Borgeson & Burns, in 1999.
