John Fanning is a former Democratic member of the West Virginia State Senate, represening District 6 from 1968 to 1980, 1984 to 1988, and 1997 to 2012. Fanning's political experience began with his work as mayor of the Town of Iaeger from 1962 to 1966. He was then appointed to the West Virginia State Senate in 1968.

Fanning attended Davis and Elkins College.
