Garamendi is running for re-election in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing California's 3rd District as a Democrat. He was displaced from his current district by redistricting.[1] There are five other candidates competing in the June 5, 2012 open primary.
Based on an analysis of bill sponsorship by GovTrack, Garamendi is a "moderate Democratic follower".[2]
Biography
Born in Mokelumne Hill, California, of Basque descent, Garamendi received a B.A. in business from the University of California, Berkeley, and a M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. He served in the Peace Corps in Ethiopia from 1966 to 1968. Garamendi is an Eagle Scout and recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. Garamendi is also a member of Sigma Chi, as a brother of the Alpha Beta Chapter at Berkeley.[3]

Following California's redistricting, Garamendi was displaced from the 10th into the 3rd district.
According to the Washington Post, redistricting has transformed the 3rd district into a swing district. While Garamendi's seat was formerly a safe one, the newly drawn district will be a battleground for Republicans and Democrats fighting for control of the House.[8]

On November 2, 2010, Garamendi won re-election to the United States House. He defeated Gary Clift (R) and Jeremy Cloward (Green) in the general election.[9]
