John Hoffman is the current acting Attorney General of New Jersey. He was first appointed to the position in June 2013 by Gov. Chris Christie to replace Jeff Chiesa, who was appointed to the U.S. Senate.[1]

Hoffman will serve as acting attorney general until Christie either nominates a permanent replacement or asks the state Senate to confirm Hoffman as permanent. The governor has not provided a timetable on when he will make a decision.[2]

Prior to his appointment, Hoffman was serving as Executive Assistant Attorney General under Chiesa. Additionally, he has served as Director of the Division of Investigations for the New York Comptroller’s Office, was an Assistant United States Attorney for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey, and a Trial Attorney for the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.[3]

Biography

Hoffman previously served as executive assistant attorney under Jeff Chiesa and has worked as an Assistant United State Attorney for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey. While in that position he focused on economic and white collar criminal prosecutions. He also served as director of the Division of Investigations for the State Comptroller's Office, served as Trial Attorney for the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, and worked in private practice.[1][4]

Hoffman has served as New Jersey Attorney General since June 2013. He was named as acting attorney general to replace Jeff Chiesa. It is unclear if he will be made Chiesa's permanent replacement.

Hoffman was appointed as acting New Jersey Attorney General by Gov. Chris Christie (R) on June 7, 2013. Christie stated, “People should rest assured that acting Attorney General Hoffman is on the job, has been designated, and is operating as we speak today leading the department of law and public safety.”[1]
