Jones ran for re-election to the Illinois State Senate in District 54 in the 2012 election. However, he withdrew from the race on January 4, 2012.[2] Jones was set to face Kyle McCarter, the District 51 incumbent, in the Republican primary on March 20, 2012.[3][4][5]
Jones was targeted for defeat by Family-Pac.[6]

On November 4, 2008, Republican John Jones won re-election to the Illinois State Senate District 54 receiving 63,944 votes, ahead of Republican Henry Kijonka (27,337 votes).[7]
