Kriekard earned a bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts from Kalamazoo College. He then served in the United States Army for two years during the Vietnam War. Following the war, Kriekard returned to school and obtained a master's degree in History from Western Michigan University. He went on to receive his doctorate in Educational Administration from Arizona State University in 1985.
He then began working in the field of education. He primarily worked for the Scottsdale Unified School District as principal of Chaparral High School and Mountainside Middle School. He also worked as assistant superintendent. He worked in the filed of education until his retirement in 2009.

Kriekard and was unopposed in the August 24 primary. He was defeated by Republicans John Kavanagh and Michelle Ugenti in the November 2 general election.
