Lautz is the owner of Lautz Custom Builders which he founded in 1984. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse. Lautz went on to serve in the US Navy. He worked on several business ventures prior to starting his own company, including an apple orchard and building supply company. He is is a member of the La Crosse County Farmland Preservation Committee and the West Salem Economic Development Advisory Committee. Lautz is also a member of the La Crosse Area Builders Association and has served as its president. He is married to his wife, Nancy. They have three children.
