Before becoming a Senator, Marty had extensive political experience working in the Minnesota House of Representatives as a Administrator/Researcher for the Minnesota House Criminal Justice Committee from 1983 to 1984. Marty also worked for the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party as a Communications Director's Aide from 1979 to 1980.
Marty graduated from St. Olaf in 1978 with his Bachelor's degree.

Marty won re-election in the 2012 election for Minnesota State Senate, District 66. He was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 14 and defeated Wayde Brooks (R) in the general election on November 6.[2][3]

District 54
Marty represents Minnesota Senate District 54. District 54 includes the Minneapolis/St. Paul suburbs of Little Canada and Roseville[7].
Gay marriage stance
Marty was targeted in a commercial advertisement for comments on gay marriage made March 2, 2010. From the senate floor, Marty said he is in favor of advancing legislation legalizing marriage in Minnesota "as quickly as we can."

John is married to Connie Jaarsma. They have two children and reside in Roseville, Minnesota.
