Prior to his election to the Assembly, Murtha served as Chair of the Town of Eau Galle Board of Supervisors from 2003-2006, and a member from 1999-2003.

Murtha won re-election in the 2012 election for Wisconsin State Assembly District 29. Murtha ran unopposed in the Republican primary on August 14, 2012, and defeated Jim Swanson (D) in the general election on November 6, 2012.[2]
