John P. McDonough (born July 7, 1950, in Scranton, Pennsylvania) is the current Democratic Secretary of State of Maryland. He was appointed to the position by Governor Martin O'Malley, taking over for Interim Secretary of State Dennis Schnepfe, who had served since January 2007.

Education

Political experience

For four years beginning in 1970, McDonough worked as a legislative aide for Prince George's County Council. From 1974 until 1978, he served as Chief of Staff to Prince George's County Executive. He was a member of the Maryland Stadium Authority, which was created by Chapter 283, Acts of 1986 Maryland General Assembly and whose initial mission was to return the National Football League (NFL) to Baltimore. He returned to Prince George's County politics, serving as vice chair of its Democratic Central Committee from 1998 to 2000 and then as its Counsel since 2000.

Family life

John McDonough currently resides in Mitchellville, Maryland with his wife, Mary Lou Gober, where they have lived since 1979. The couple have three daughters together - Emily, Caitlin, and Aisling.
