After high school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and remained on active duty for 14 years and did tours of duty in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He returned to Oklahoma to work for the Sheriff's Department as a part of the drug task force. He then decided to work for the local VA as an advocate for injured veterans. Currently, he owns a storm shelter business with his wife.

Bennett ran unopposed in the Republican primary on July 27. He defeated incumbent Glen Bud Smithson (D) in the general election.[3] Smithson was seeking his fifth term.
