John T. McDevitt was a 2012 Democratic candidate for District 46 of the North Carolina State Senate. McDevitt was born in Cleveland County and grew up in Kings Mountain. He graduated from Kings Mountain High School in 1973 and became a Burke County sheriff’s deputy in 1975. McDevitt later worked at the Morganton Police Department and first ran for sheriff of Burke County in 1998. He retired from his duty as sheriff in June 2011. [1]
Elections
2012
McDevitt ran in the 2012 election for North Carolina State Senate District 46. He ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on May 8 and was defeated by incumbent Republican state Sen. Warren Daniel, a Morganton attorney in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[2]
Campaign themes
McDevitt supports strengthening public education funding, opposes free trade deals, and states that he will work for "access to well managed public lands for hunting, fishing, hiking, birding, and all other outdoor pursuits."[3]
Personal
McDevitt and his wife Cathy have three children and two granddaughters.[3]
