Born October 2, 1938 in North Platte, Nebraska, Sen. Wightman is an attorney from Lexington, Nebraska. Prior to his election as Senator, he was mayor of Lexington. He was also a ember orLexington Planning Commission; Lexington City Council and the Lexington Council of Economic Development (director). [1] Wightman graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, in 1959 and was a high school teacher for one year, before heading to law school.[2]
Wightman earned his Bachelors degree in education from Kearney State College in 1959 and his Juris Doctor from the University of Nebraska in 1963.
Wightman began working as an attorney for Smith Brothers in 1962. In 1974, he left to work for Wightman and Fallesen until 1990, when he began working for Cook, Wightman, and Doyle until 2001. In 2002 he began working for his present employers, Wightman and Wightman.
Wightman began his political experience in 1974 as part of the Lexington City Council. He remained on the council until 1978 but would later rejoin in 1984, continuing his service until 2000. Between that time, he served as mayor of the Lexington city council from 1992 to 1995. In 2007, he began his service as senator on the Nebraska State Legislature.
Wightman is involved with a number of organizations, including the Lexington Chamber of Commerce, Nebraska Bar Foundation, United Methodist Church, Dawson Area Development, Lexington Community Foundation, Dawson County Bar Association, Nebraska Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.
Wightman currently serves on two non-legislative committees, the Lexington Planning Commission and the Lexington Council of Economic Development.
On September 16, 2012, Wightman suffered a moderate stroke and was subsequently hospitalized. Previous health issues include three knee replacements, and an infection that kept him out of a portion of the legislative session in 2011.[3]

On November 2, 2010, Wightman was re-elected to the 36th District Seat in the Nebraska Senate. Wightman ran unopposed in the general election.[4]
