Crutchfield received a Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences and a Masters Degree in Education from Southeastern State College. He went on to complete post-graduate work at the University of Oklahoma. In addition to serving as senator, Crutcfield is a rancher. Previously, Crutchfield worked as a classroom teacher at Ardmore Public Schools from 1970-1998.
