Maciel was born in Brockton, Massachusetts. While attending King Philip Regional High School, he performed quantitative research on the hydrometeorological cycle of a local brook. He was able to later present his findings at the Northeast Storm Conference in Burlington, Vermont and at the American Meteorological Society in Atlanta, Georgia.
Upon graduation from high school, he attended Lydon State College in Lyndonville, Vermont. Maciel's involvement in politics began in college. As a freshman and sophomore, he was elected as a student senator in the Student Government Association. As a junior, he was elected to the executive board as secretary of the SGA, and as a senior, he was elected president. As a member of the SGA, he entertained Senator Bernie Sanders and attended meetings at the Vermont state capital to discuss student issues with the governor and lieutenant governor. He also participated in weekly meetings with then College President Carol Moore.
Following graduation from college, in 2009, Maciel began work as a technical support representative for CVS/Caremark in Smithfield, Rhode Island. He assisted store and pharmacy employees with technical issues.
In 2010, he began a contract role as an infrastructure analyst for Mercer in Norwood, Massachusetts. At Mercer, Maciel assisted in a multitude of technical areas including storage, networking, server systems and virtualization.
At the end of 2011, Maciel received an internal promotion to work full-time as the global test lab engineer for the MMC Global Technology Infrastructure in Franklin, Massachusetts. He is currently employed in this role.
