Verola ran in the 2012 election for Florida House of Representatives District 36. He controversially filed as a write-in candidate, which by Florida law turned the Republican primary on August 14, 2012, -- in which his next door neighbor James Mathieu unsuccessfully ran -- from an open primary to a closed one. He was defeated by Mike Fasano (R) in the November 6 general election.
