Broadsword has owned three different businesses since 1978 in the home building industry and was an Executive Assistant for the Downtown Sandpoint Business Association in 2004.
Broadsword was actively involved in politics before becoming a Senator. Broadsword served as a campaign volunteer for U.S. Senator Larry Craig and Idaho Governor Dirk Kempthrone. Broadsword was also a city coordinator for Congressman Butch Otter in 2002
Broadsword graduated with her diploma from Sandpoint Senior High School in 1976.

Redistricting placed Broadsword into District 1 with incumbent Shawn Keough (R), leading to a potential 2012 faceoff between the two.[2] Rather than face that possibility, however, Broadsword announced that she would not be seeking re-election.
“I have known since they started talking about reapportionment that there was no way I was going to run against Sen. Keough - I have too much respect for her, she is too valuable to the folks of North Idaho to lose her in the Senate," she said.[3]

Broadsword defeated Dennis Englehardt and James Stivers in the May 25 primary. She had no opposition in the general election on November 2, 2010.[4]
