Kansas Governor Sam Brownback

By Greg Janetka

TOPEKA, Kansas: As some 100 people protested last night outside of the Kansas Statehouse against Gov. Sam Brownback (R) and Republican legislators for moving the state too far to the right, the governor was preparing his annual state of the state address in which he'll lay out his legislative agenda for the year.[1]

Brownback will deliver his address tonight, the third since he took office in 2011, to a joint session of the Legislature. He is expected to present his plan for resolving the state's projected $267 million budget shortfall and offer a response to a court ruling last week that declared unconstitutional the school financing formula currently used by the state.[2]

Other topics he is likely to address include efforts to monitor the impact of a three-year drought in the state and possible reforms to the state's Medicaid and mental health programs.[3]
