Kansas City, Kansas residents may see sales tax vote in November
KANSAS CITY, Kansas: Residents may see a sales tax initiative take place on the November 3, 2009 ballot in Kansas City, Kansas. The Unified Board of Commissioners of Wyandotte County met on August 6, 2009 to put together the wording of a ballot initiative that would fill holes in the recently adopted $250 million budget.
The proposed ballot measure must be approved by the city commission no later than September 29, 2009 if it is to make it to the November ballot. The commission will hold forums with business leaders and labor unions in order to see which holes in the budget need to be filled the most.
If enacted, the measure would implement a 1/4 cent or a 3/8 cent increase in the area’s sales tax. Most of the current sales tax goes directly to the state.[1]
City Manager Bonaparte defends budget proposal
TOPEKA, Kansas: City Manager Norton Bonaparte proposed his budget to the Topeka City Council on a July 7, 2009 meeting, then defended it to the media during a news conference the next day.
Bonaparte's proposed budget calls for a $34.5 mill levy. This is 1.85 higher than the current levey. In addition, the proposal would take $1 million from salaried positions. Bonaparte says this will translate to around 20 jobs and when positions are vacated, the city will look at alternate ways to accomplish tasks without filling the position.[2]
Bonaparte says he believes the budget is something the city will benefit from but Councilwoman Karen Hiller said she has heard plenty of taxpayers who are not in favor of it, especially of the allowance for just under $1 million for the Police Aviation Unit.
