Finley ran in a special election for Alabama House of Representatives District 97. The seat was vacant due to Yvonne Kennedy's (D) death on December 8, 2012. Gov. Robert Bentley (R) scheduled a special election to fill the vacancy for May 21, with a primary on February 26, 2013. Finley faced William Carroll, Jeffery Ray Jones, Levi Wright, Jr., Kimberly Williams Pettway, Ronnie L. Williams and Adline C. Clarke in the Democratic primary. As no candidate took over 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters - Finley and Clarke - met in a runoff on April 9, which Clarke won.[2][3][1][4]
