Born in Burwell, Nebraska, Sullivan is a banker and business executive from Cedar Rapids. Along with her service on the legislature, Sullivan is a member of the board of directors of Cedar Rapids State Bank, president of the Kokes Corporation family farm, and vice president of Bluestem Beef, Inc. Formerly, Sullivan served as treasurer on the Cedar Rapids School Board. [1]
Sullivan earned her bachelor's degree and M.S. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1971 and 1975 respectively.

Sullivan won re-election in the 2012 election for Nebraska State Senate District 41. Sullivan was unopposed in the May 15 primary election and defeated Brook Curtiss in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[2][3]
