Sims has owned Coeur d'Alene Honda since 1968 and served as a state Senator from 2001 to 2002 after being appointed to fill the seat of former Senator and Lieutenant Governor Jack Riggs. She also served as chair of the Kootenai County Republican Party and vice chair of the state party. Sims holds an A.A. in Accounting from North Idaho Junior College.

Sims won re-election to the Idaho House of Representatives in 2012. She was unopposed in the Republican primary on May 15[1] and defeated Anne L. Nesse (D) in the general election on November 6, 2012.[2]
