Hawken earned her AA from Stephens College and BS in Education from the University of Missouri. She and her husband, Harry, have two children.[1]

Hawken ran in the 2012 election for North Dakota Senate District 46. Hawken and fellow incumbent Jim Kasper ran unopposed in the Republican primary on June 12. They defeated Diane R. Hill and Lee Myxter in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[2]
