Frankfort, Kentucky: Kentucky House Republicans have filed a lawsuit to block the legislative redistricting map passed by the Democratic majority. Republicans say the map unconstitutionally split counties and was unfavorable to Republicans.
The filing deadline for candidates was set for Tuesday. The judge considering the suit is expected to rule whether to extend the deadline while he considers the case.
Kentucky also faces difficulties in creating new districts for its congressional seats. The state Senate unanimously passed a bill to extend by a week the filing deadline for candidates, originally set for January 31. Speaker of the House Greg Stumbo (D) is optimistic that the extra week will give the two chambers time to agree on a new map. States are redistricting following the results of the 2010 U.S. census.
