McCarter won election in the 2012 election for Illinois State Senate District 54. McCarter was to face incumbent John Jones in the Republican primary on March 20, 2012, but Jones withdrew on January 4, leaving McCarter unopposed.[3] McCarter defeated Danny L. Stover (D) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[4][5][6]
